LOW SNOWFALL AND AN EXPECTED DRY FORECAST LED TO STATEWIDE DROUGHT DECLARATION
The Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) has decided to declare a drought emergency for the majority of Washington state due to low snow pack levels and a dry and warm forecast for Spring and Summer. Water contained in mountain snowpacks and reservoirs don’t have enough water to prevent serious impacts to water consumers. The DOE drought declaration aims to make assistance available before severe impacts are realized as water sheds project low water supplies and emergency water right transfers. Along with other state agencies, DOE is coordinating a drought response. DOE is working to develop $4.5 million in drought response grants for public entities. By declaring a drought, the DOE is allowed to process emergency water rights permits and transfers.
