THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMLY ADOPTS THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE POTATO
As of early last week, the United Nations General Assembly has accepted the International Day of the Potato. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Potato Congress, and Foreign Affairs of Peru, and MIDAGRI (Ministries of Agriculture) have all went to great lengths to get this initiative in front of the United Nations General Assembly. The first ever International Day of the Potato will be held on May 30th, 2024, and will be the start of an annual celebration date.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Peru made a joint press release stating that the potato will play a large role in food security, nutrition, and industries’ financial contribution to the economy. They also touched on the importance of small farmers in addition to ensuring sustainable practices to protect the environment.
This International day gives a chance to educate and celebrate the popular potato. This annual day follows the International Year of Potato that was observed in 2008. The goal is to bring to light the large impact potatoes make not only on the economy, but also its nutritional and cultural value, reduce poverty, and increase food security.
