PRESIDENT BIDEN ROLLS OUT A NATIONAL STRATEGY AIMED AT ENDING HUNGER IN THE U.S. BY 2030 AND CALLS FOR ACTIONS TO FIGHT FOOD RELATED ILLNESSES.
In a five-pillar plan to combat hunger and curb food related illness, President Biden is calling for Congress, the private sector, and philanthropic groups, with his assistance, to actively tackle long term goals to combat hunger and improve the health of all Americans.
A PoliticoPro article by Meredith Lee Hill covers, in depth, the plan presented by President Biden. Congress will be asked to pass legislation to further this strategy and President Biden has also included executive actions in the plan that eliminates the need for legislation. Immediately, five changes will take place, including the improvement of access to the federal nutrition program, action by the FDA to promote healthy eating by developing voluntary nutrition standards, the reduction of food waste by use of tax deductions for businesses, updating the nutrition standards to help food insecure children and veterans, and the improved access to food for vulnerable Americans. The Agriculture Department will make effort along with the Social Security Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services, Education, Labor and Housing and Urban Development to educate the population of federal nutrition programs and help enroll eligible Americans. Along with this action, Biden is asking the USDA to improve the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Special Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children. To reduce child hunger, the administration will update the nutritional standards for school meals plus increase eligibility for free and reduced lunches. For American Veterans who need support, Biden is creating a new office of food security at the Department of Veteran Affairs.
The Food and Drug Administration will set requirements for food nutrition labels for foods that claim to be healthy, to place labels on front of packaging, and to develop new voluntary targets for nutrition. Under the plan, Biden is cutting down food waste by having the Treasury Department develop charitable tax reductions for companies that donate leftover food instead of discarding it.
