WSU WELCOMES NEW ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN POTATO PATHOLOGY
Washington State University’s Department of Plant Pathology has announced the hiring of its newest faculty member, Dr. Vinicius Garnica, who will join the department on June 16, 2026. He will serve as an Assistant Professor specializing in potato pathology, with responsibilities in research, extension, and teaching.
Dr. Garnica brings strong expertise in plant disease epidemiology that will support potato stakeholders throughout the Pacific Northwest. He will be based in Pullman, where he will establish his laboratory in Vogel Hall.
Prior to joining WSU, Dr. Garnica served in the Department of Plant Pathology at The Ohio State University, where he has been wrapping up his current responsibilities.
The department extended its appreciation to the search committee for leading a thorough and successful hiring process. Members included Scott Harper (chair), Chakradhar Mattupalli, Kiwamu Tanaka, Tim Paulitz, Carrie Wohleb, and Matthew Blua.
Dr. Garnica’s arrival marks an exciting chapter for WSU’s potato pathology program as he builds upon the strong foundation laid by previous WSU scientists and continues advancing research and support for the region’s potato industry.
