WSU COMMERCIAL POTATO SEED LOT TRIAL – 2026 SEED SAMPLES REQUESTED

Washington State University is once again preparing for the 2026 Commercial Potato Seed Lot Trial, an important industry program funded by Washington potato growers to provide independent evaluations of seed quality before planting decisions are made.

Each year, seed samples submitted by growers are planted at the WSU Othello Research Unit, where researchers evaluate the emerging plants for potential seed-borne issues such as disease, herbicide carryover, and variety mixes. The side-by-side comparisons allow growers to better understand quality differences among seed lots, regions, and production cycles—valuable information when selecting seed for future plantings. The trial also helps train WSU and Washington State Department of Agriculture seed certification personnel, strengthening the expertise that supports Washington’s seed potato system.

Growers are encouraged to submit a representative sample of each seed lot, with a minimum of 50 pounds of untreated 2–4 oz whole seed (or approximately 200 single-drop seed). Sample tags can be obtained through the Washington State Potato Commission, and seed samples may be delivered to the WSU Othello Potato Research Building or arranged for pickup through regional contacts.

Seed pickup occurs one day prior to each planting date.

The trial culminates with the annual WSU Potato Field Day on June 25, where growers and industry members can view results, discuss observations, and connect with researchers. Virus readings of seed lots will take place June 9 and June 23.
