WSPC SEEKING SPUDS FOR BLOOMSDAY

For the past seven years, the Washington State Potato Commission (WSPC) has proudly partnered with Bloomsday to promote our Powered by Potatoes program, highlighting the health and nutritional benefits of potatoes, especially for athletes fueling their performance.  This effort continues to grow each year. Today, we have more than 1,000 Team Potato members representing Washington potatoes across the country, wearing their jerseys in marathons, races, bike rides, and more. Their message is simple: potatoes power performance.

One of the highlights of Bloomsday weekend is the Bloomsday Expo, where we connect directly with thousands of participants. For the past six years, we’ve distributed Washington potatoes to attendees, and it has become a crowd favorite. Each year, our booth draws excitement (and even media attention) as attendees eagerly line up to grab fresh Washington spuds.  What started as handing out loose potatoes in backpacks has evolved over time. With rising costs and changing event trends, we transitioned to distributing 3 and 5-pound bags of potatoes, a practical and well-received option for attendees who then walk the streets of Spokane carrying WA spuds.

Last year alone, we distributed an incredible 3,750 pounds of potatoes in just the first day! The demand was overwhelming and speaks to the strong connection consumers have with our product.  As we prepare for this year’s Bloomsday Expo on May 1–2, we are seeking support from our industry partners to help make this effort possible again. Due to budget constraints, we are reaching out to growers and shippers to ask:

Do you have 3# or 5# bags of potatoes you’d be willing to donate?

To help minimize costs, a grower has generously volunteered to pick up and deliver donations to Spokane, eliminating the need for shipping. We would greatly appreciate donations of any size—every bag helps us continue sharing the story of Washington potatoes and connecting with thousands of consumers in a meaningful way.
