WSDA IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR IT’S COMPOST REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM

The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is now accepting applications for its second year of its Compost Reimbursement Program (CRP). WSDA created the CRP program to encourage farms to compost, and the program is eligible to all commercial Washington Farmers. This includes agricultural, silviculture, and aquaculture farms. By participating, farms are eligible for 50% reimbursement on qualifying compost cost plus the transportation, equipment, and labor costs associated. Farm size and proposed budgets are the basis for funding limits for participants. All compost must be acquired from an approved compost facility.

Note the effective changes made by the Washington State Legislature to the program this year.

• Applications will be prioritized based on the presence of food waste feedstock in the compost purchased.
• Distribution of reimbursements will be based on farm size.
• Compost can be purchased from a Washington compost facility with either a solid waste handling permit, or a facility that is permit exempt.

Applications will be accepted from July 29, 2024 to September 12, 2024.

To apply, applicants must provide:

• Statewide Vendor Number,
• Compost facility quote where compose is to be purchased, and a
• Proposed budget detailing estimated costs.

To be approved for the program, participants and their compost source must be eligible. Conditionally approved participants must sign a grant agreement to participate before eligible purchases can be made. In addition, a soil sample must be collected before the compost is applied. Reimbursements will be made after expenses are incurred by submitting a single reimbursement form for all expenses to WSDU.

The CRP program was established by the Washington State Legislature in 2023 upon the passage and funding of Revised Code of Washington 15.04.420.
