Washington State is updating its pesticide application rules to align with new federal pesticide safety standards. These changes are designed to enhance safety for applicators, the public, and the environment.

Beginning January 1, 2026, most pesticide license holders will need to complete a Certification & Training (C&T) course or C&T quiz to meet the new EPA standards. These training options cover a broad range of federally required topics.

What This Means for You

Most licensees will need to take action to meet these updated requirements and maintain their license. Many will be required to complete a C&T-specific recertification course.

After January 1, 2026, you must complete the required C&T course or quiz before the end of your current recertification cycle.

How to Get Started

Follow these three simple steps to understand your requirements:

Step 1: Look up your license type

Identify whether you are a:

  • Commercial applicator
  • Public operator
  • Private applicator
  • Or another license type

Step 2: Review your license categories

Check your category-specific requirements—for example:

  • Weed control
  • Pest management
  • Aquatic
  • Structural
    (Requirements vary by category.)

Step 3: Complete your required C&T course or quiz

Take the C&T training option that applies to your license and category to meet the new standards.
