WASHINGTON’S POTATO INDUSTRY: A POWERHOUSE FOR RURAL ECONOMIES

3.7/5 rating (3 votes)

Washington’s potato industry continues to be a major economic driver for the state—especially in rural communities east of the Cascades. In 2024, total sales of Washington-grown potatoes reached $1.185 billion, with the value of processed potato product exports soaring to $4.42 billion. These exports not only bring new money into the state but also stimulate rural job creation and business growth. The potato sector supported more than 33,700 jobs statewide, including over 13,000 directly tied to production and processing. This activity generated nearly $8.8 billion in total economic output and resulted in $305 million in tax revenue for state and local governments. While Idaho remains the top potato-producing state by acreage, Washington leads in productivity. In fact, Washington’s yields are 48% higher than Idaho’s, thanks in part to efficient farming practices and strong infrastructure. Despite these strengths, Washington’s potato industry faces rising competition from imports, particularly from Canada. Ongoing trade uncertainties continue to shape the future landscape for domestic consumption and global exports. Still, Washington’s value-added processing and superior yields give it a unique edge—solidifying the potato industry’s role as a cornerstone of rural economic vitality.
