WASHINGTON POTATOES SERVE UP FRIES AT THE APPLE CUP

0.0/5 rating (0 votes)

Washington potatoes were part of one of the state’s biggest football traditions as the Huskies and Cougars faced off in the 118th Apple Cup on Sunday, September 6, at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

This year’s matchup made history as the first-ever Apple Cup played on a Sunday and the first time the rivalry served as the season opener for both teams. The game was also broadcast nationwide on NBC, putting one of Washington’s favorite rivalries in the national spotlight. More than 71,000 fans packed Husky Stadium for the matchup.

Before kickoff, Washington State Potato Commission staff were busy serving hot, fresh Washington potato fries in the tailgating area outside Husky Ballpark.  Next to us was the Washington Grown crew handing out footballs and facts. Fans from both sides of the rivalry stopped by for a serving of fries, and Commission staff were happy to fuel Huskies and Cougars alike with one thing everyone could agree on, our delicious Washington fries!  It was fun to hear fans give the commission team facts about the number one potato producing county in the nation and the amount of potatoes that we grow to turn into french fries!

The Apple Cup is always a great opportunity to connect with consumers and showcase Washington agriculture in a fun, high-energy setting. With thousands of fans making their way through the tailgating area, the smell of fresh fries made the Washington Potatoes booth a popular stop before the game.

On the field, No. 17 Washington came away with the win, defeating Washington State 24–10.

No matter which team fans were cheering for, Washington grown potatoes were a winning part of Apple Cup weekend!
