TRI-STATE POTATO CONSORTIUM ADVANCES NEW VARIETIES AT 2025 CLONE SELECTION

0.0/5 rating (0 votes)

Developing high-performing potato varieties for the processing, fresh market, and chipping industries remains a central mission of the Tri-State Potato Consortium. Breeders at the USDA and Aberdeen Research and Extension Center continue to play a pivotal role in releasing new potato varieties and germplasm with improved disease and pest resistance, higher yields, and enhanced tuber quality.

The 2025 Clone Selection was held September 23–25, 2025 in Aberdeen, Idaho drawing participation from scientists, graduate students, staff, and industry representatives across the Tri-State region. Over the three-day event, participants visually evaluated potato clones and identified those with desirable traits and superior quality for continued advancement.

Potato selection is guided by market needs, local growing conditions, and key characteristics such as yield, shape, color, and maturity. The next cycle of crossing and selection will focus on building on this progress, with the goal of developing improved varieties that meet the evolving needs of growers, processors, and consumers.
