Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced new guidance to prevent sudden speed and power losses in diesel vehicles caused by diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system failures. The EPA is urging manufacturers to update software in existing diesel engines and equipment, allowing operators such as farmers and truckers more time to make necessary repairs without unexpected shutdowns. Starting with model year 2027, all new diesel on-road trucks must be engineered to avoid severe power loss when DEF runs out. The guidance, developed in collaboration with manufacturers, eliminates the need for additional EPA approvals, ensuring faster implementation.
