Washington potato growers planning equipment investments may want to take a close look at a new funding opportunity from the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA). Beginning September 4, 2026, WSDA will begin accepting applications for its new Climate Smart Farm Equipment Grant, a reimbursement program designed to help producers purchase equipment that improves efficiency while supporting soil health and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Funded through Washington's Climate Commitment Act, the program offers up to $4.3 million in Fiscal Year 2026 and will award grants on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible commercial farming operations can receive reimbursement for 75% of eligible equipment costs, up to $200,000 per farm. Farms meeting certain criteria—including smaller operations, veterans, tribal entities, or farms in qualifying environmental health areas—may be eligible for an 85% reimbursement rate.

For potato producers, the grant could help offset the cost of equipment such as GPS precision agriculture technology, no-till drills, electric irrigation pumps, compost spreaders, drone sprayers, and other equipment that improves field efficiency or reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Innovative equipment not yet included on USDA equipment lists may also qualify if applicants provide scientific support demonstrating its climate benefits. Equipment used solely for post-harvest handling, processing, packing, or transportation is not eligible.

Growers interested in applying should begin preparing now. Before applications open, producers should:

  • Register for a Washington Statewide Vendor (SWV) number, which typically takes 3–5 business days.
  • Obtain a detailed vendor quote that includes equipment specifications and delivery costs.
  • Confirm equipment can be delivered and paid for by June 1, 2027.
  • Wait until after receiving an executed grant agreement before purchasing equipment.

Applications open at 8:00 a.m. PT on September 4, 2026 and close on October 19, 2026, although funding may be exhausted earlier due to the first-come, first-served structure. Growers considering qualifying equipment purchases are encouraged to prepare their application materials in advance to maximize their chances of receiving funding.
