WSU is demolishing Johnson Hall this Fall and a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) building will be erected in its place to allow USDA and WSU scientists to work together. Johnson Hall opened its doors at WSU in 1960 and has been home to many agricultural researchers but the building’s age makes it inadequate to support contemporary agricultural research. Currently, Johnson Hall’s 169,000 square feet is being demolished and the process will go through March 2023.

The College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) and WSU Facilities Services has worked hard to see that resources from Johnson Hall were salvaged, reused or recycled. Many of the counter tops from the building are being placed in other buildings on campus instead of purchasing new. The available resources were shared with WSU research centers, farms, and research and teaching programs.

Construction on the new USDA owned building is expected to take three years and will be home to USDA and WSU researchers. The Washington State Potato Commission (WSPC) played an important role in working with WSU to secure funding for the new USDA building and has contributed temporary refrigerated shipping containers for use by our potato researchers while the new building is constructed.
