ITS BACK TO THE BARGAINING TABLE AS MAJORITY OF A RAIL MAINTENANCE UNION VOTE AGAINST RATIFYING NATIONAL AGREEMENT WITH CLASS I FREIGHT RAILROADS.

The decision made by the majority of rail maintenance union to vote against ratifying a national agreement with Class I freight railroads means a return to the bargaining table and the potential for work stoppage. Of the 11,845 rail maintenance union votes counted and verified by the American Arbitration Association, 6,646 tallied were against ratifying the agreement, 5,100 were in favor and ninety-nine were voided or submitted blank. The rejection by membership is due to railroaders’ disapproval of working conditions and compensation. Now, the rail maintenance union and Class I freight railroads will continue the bargaining period during a “status quo” period ending November 19, 2022. This is five days after Congress is back in session so there will be no “self-help” until this date at the earliest.
