FOOD AND FARM LEGISLATIVE TOUR
The Food & Farm Tour in Walla Walla drew in over 65 legislators, growers, and industry representatives for an outdoor in-person educational opportunity. Many miles were driven in this caravan event to hear from industry experts touring some of the most fertile agricultural lands in Washington State. Some topics covered included labor needs for seasonal overtime exemptions, importance of natural gas, crop protectants and IPM practices, carbon reduction, dairy nutrient management, competitiveness with neighboring states, and importance to reform HFC regulations for family farms to hold food safely year-round.
The group toured dryland wheat, potatoes, blueberries, asparagus, orchard, vineyard, dairy, input supplier/manufacturer, grain elevator and a nonprofit that supplies a network of partner food banks, meal sites and other programs feeding people in need. A gratitude of thanks for speakers Lt. Governor Denny Heck, Washington State Agriculture Director Derek Sandison, Alex McGregor, McGregor Company for his insightful view of how a global emphasis should be placed on salmon and orca recovery and Stan Ryan, President and CEO of Darigold talking about farm/dairy competitiveness and the need for natural gas.
