2019 WSNA Recipe Contest

Another successful year of teaming up with the Washington State School Nutrition Association is in the books! This year, the Washington State Potato Commission did things a bit differently-we decided to host the 1st annual School Nutrition Recipe Contest! Contestants from across the state submitted their USDA approved school recipes for a chance to win a free trip to the summer WSNA conference with paid mileage and more! Brandy Tucker, Director of Operations and Marketing at WSPC, presented four winners with a special plaque and recognize contestants for their creativity at the Washington School Nutrition Association’s conference in Spokane. Tucker stated “We are so impressed by the devotion of those involved in feeding kids all across the state. WSPC wants to recognize everyone for their hard work.”

We had a lot of great entries in this contest, it was a tough to only select four winning recipes! Chris Lutgen of the Wenatchee School District won first place with his Jalapeno Cheese Poppers recipe, winning him an all-expense trip to the Washington School Nutrition Association’s annual conference in Spokane.  Lutgen took the cheese mixture of a very popular menu item – Jalapeno Grilled Cheese Sandwiches – and adapted it to become a Poutine, the classic Canadian combination of fries, cheese curds and gravy.  He serves the Jalapeno cheese mixture with oven-fried crispy potato wedges.  Students love it, as did the contest judges. The Northshore School District team created the second-place winning Potato Soup recipe. This soup is a hearty, warm home-cooked hit among students! Kaydee Harris created the third-place recipe-Fiesta Potatoes! Harris entered into this contest because she “LOVES potatoes! Our 4th place winner, Valerie Gray, from Wenatchee School District created a tasty Loaded Potato Dog recipe which combined some of her student’s favorite foods, into one delicious meal!

Without a doubt this contest was a huge success. Next year we are expecting even more turnout for this contest and can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Encouraging school foodservice operators to use more poatoes

As America’s Favorite Vegetable, potatoes can help provide students with the nutrients and energy they need to do their best during the school day. That’s why it’s important to remind school foodservice operators that potatoes are not only delicious, but also cost-effective and a nutritious addition to the school menu. In partnership with the School Nutrition Association (SNA), two webinars featured potatoes.  The first webinar, “Maximize Your Menus and Minimize Labor Constraints with Potatoes”, showcased potatoes through on-trend, student-friendly menu innovations and solutions to ease labor strains. The second webinar, “Fun Summer Feeding with Potatoes”, showcased how putting potatoes at the center of the plate can enhance summer feeding programs in fresh and fun ways. Both webinars included a live cooking demonstration with Potatoes USA Culinary Director Chef RJ Harvey, RD and Award-Winning Author Dayle Hayes, MS, RD. The demonstrations were pre-recorded in the Potatoes USA Spud Lab and were a big hit with the participants. Webinars Key Takeaways: Nutritional benefits of potatoes at an affordable price How potatoes can limit food waste Ways potatoes can take over as the center of the plate How serving potatoes to children over the summer can be fun Upon webinar completion, attendees were able to earn continuing education credits. All recipes and resources utilized in the webinar are available on the SNA website for future download. Following are some quotes from the operators who were very engaged in the webinar chat. “My favorite Webinar I’ve seen so far this year. VERY helpful and insightful. Well Done!”  “Love Dayle and RJ as a team. Can they please start a cooking youtube series? ‘Dayle and RJ: Potatoes for All!’” “Great webinar, gained new ideas for using potatoes. Thank you!” SNA is recognized as the authority on school nutrition and utilizes weekly webinars to educate their 50,000+ members.
